Technique is often thought of as acting "from the outside in". Students are aware of the outside environment when they develop their work. The elements to consider are: the script, the set, the physical personality, the emotional and intellectual personality and the physical movement within the set. The ultimate aim is to create a believable character, which fits the script. Learning to pay attention to the details is key! TECHNIQUES Over the years, new training methods evolved to include approaches from diverse practitioners such as “Meisner”, “Stanislavski”, “Uta Hagen” and other important contemporary training techniques. The Meisner Technique Sanford Meisner Meisner Training gives you a clear approach to acting that allows complete freedom of expression and confidence in your abilities. Actors learn to “live truthfully under imaginary circumstances.” Mr. Meisner’s approach emphasizes that to carry out an action truthfully on Film, or Television, it is necessary to let emotion and subtext build on the truth of the action and on the other characters around them, rather than simply playing the action or playing the emotion. Meisner students were James Caan, Steve McQueen, Robert Duvall, Gregory Peck, Bob Fosse, Diane Keaton, Peter Falk, Jon Voight, Jeff Goldblum, Grace Kelly, Tony Randall and Sydney Pollack. A number of directors also studied with him, among them Sidney Lumet, and writers such as Arthur Miller and David Mamet. YFA believes the technique is helpful not just for actors, but also for directors, writers, and teachers. The Stanislavski Technique Constantin Stanislavski Stanislavski’s system, actors deeply analyze the motivations and emotions of their characters in order to personify them with psychological realism and emotional authenticity. Using the Method, an actor recalls emotions or a sensation from his or her own life and uses them to identify with the character being portrayed. Some of Stainslavski’s Students are Montgomery Clift, Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Paul Newman, Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, Alec Baldwin, Robert De Niro, Jane Fonda, Ellen Burstyn, Tom Hanks, Robin Williams, and Daniel Day-Lewis. The Uta Hagen Technique Uta Hagen Uta Hagen’s techniques are: Concept – talent, imagination, grip on reality, desire to communicate, character and ethics, point of view, understanding human behavior, total discipline. Train and perfect all. Identity – Know who you are. Connect feeling to behavior. Be self aware, not self-conscious.
